Who are Down's & Proud

Proud of who we are.

It's almost difficult to know where or when to start when attempting to tell the story of our courageous and beautiful children and their parents, who all have one thing in common - living with Down's syndrome.

Down's syndrome is very often misunderstood yet it has touched all of the families involved in our optimistic and flourishing group.  It is a condition that initially scared many of us, little did we know the journey it would take us on. A journey which would demonstrate some of the very best qualities in the community that surrounds us; understanding, compassion and love.

Even though all of our families have been affected by Down's syndrome the real heroes of Down's & Proud are our children. As the name suggests, we are immensely proud of them and having all travelled a small part of this wonderful journey we now know that our lives would not be complete without living with Down's syndrome.

About Us

Our Story

When my son, Jay, was born with Down’s syndrome, I found that my local community was lacking a support group. As time moved on and more children in my area were born with Down's syndrome, I knew that we all had common ground and felt we could benefit from sharing our experiences and act as support for each other.

In 2007, what started out as coffee mornings at my house evolved into a very successful and productive group – Down’s & Proud. From the beginning, it became apparent that the one thing we all shared as parents of children with Down’s Syndrome was how proud we are of our children and their siblings for the way they cope with having a brother or sister that may need that little bit extra help.

We are also very proud of Down’s & Proud as a group and the way the local community has embraced us. Without our community, we would not be able to carry on as they are the ones that fund the group.

Throughout the year, we raise funds that pay for our annual Summer Scheme, educational aids for our children, training courses and activity days for our children. These funds are also used to cater for specific individual needs that will help our children in Down’s & Proud. Because of this, we are very proud of our community and local businesses and thank them for helping to make Down’s & Proud possible.

About Us

Aims

As it is a parent-led organisation, we want to make sure that the little bit of extra help our children may require is being provided for. We want to make sure the parents are happy and that they have adequate support and information to help with decisions they may face throughout their child’s education and beyond.

We aim to provide support and a listening ear for those who want to share their thoughts and experiences. Down’s & Proud aims to raise awareness for Down’s syndrome, as the more people are aware and educated about the condition, the easier it will be on our children. A huge aim of the group is to ensure our children grow up together and be friends.

There is only one goal that Down’s and Proud has and that is to ensure that our children are happy.
